The origins of baccarat are basset and faro
Some books and websites claim that baccarat came to France from Italy in the 15th century. This is a misconception and they are probably saying that the game of Basset came from Italy to France in the 15th century. Basset is a game played with the dealer as follows: each player gets 13 cards dealt and can place a chip on each of them. The dealer then deals the cards alternately between the two stacks in front of him. To start with, the dealer deals one card and wins by betting on any cards of the same value. Then the dealer deals the cards in pairs - for the first card of the pair, the dealer wins bets made on any cards of the same value, but for the second card of the pair, the player wins the bet amount if the value is the same. In the 19th century, Faro was the most popular casino game in the world, but by 1900 it had been superseded by Blackjack and Baccarat.
